    Introduction

Under the circumstances created by the coronavirus, technical sections are curtailed in their ability to deliver TRTA. With workshops cancelled or postponed, project managers need to find new ways to reach their beneficiaries and carry out their project activities. Although the SME Trade Academy’s traditional e-learning services are an option, the lead times in developing e-learning courses, along with the cost associated with such development make them unviable in the short term.

    Webinars: the way to go?

Many project managers will doubtless be tempted to revert to webinars as a replacement for their workshops. They, after all, provide a certain psychological comfort: an event is still happening, even though it is only virtual.

Indeed, beyond the technical issues that often arise when they are held, webinars tend to devolve into “talking head” sessions in which passive attendees are presented with one-way lectures given in less than ideal audio-visual circumstances.

However, webinars are limited in their effectiveness. Alone, they are no more than a partial solution, as their goal is simply to provide beneficiaries with a lower-quality substitute for a face-to-face workshop.

Such attendees could just as easily listen to the recording of the webinar, rather than having to attend them live. When it does happen, effective interactivity in webinars is only possible with very small groups.

    The SME Trade Academy solution

    Virtual Workshopping Tool
The SME Trade Academy has developed a virtual workshopping solution to assist technical sections to achieve their learning objectives and effectively reach their beneficiaries.
    The Principle
This solution uses a combination of rapid e-learning development principles, a dedicated platform, webinars and structured interactions. Importantly, it can be put together quickly and cost-effectively using available materials and resources easily deployable remotely.
How quickly can we set this up?
A project could be up workshopping solution is that it is developed around a human resource (the workshop presenter/facilitator).
How is this different from e-learning?
This is different from traditional e-learning, which is designed based on a self-study approach, meaning that it requires a greater investment in terms of interactive content to guide learners through a predetermined learning process. By contrast, the virtual workshopping solution is more spontaneous; it makes use of currently available materials to create a comprehensive remote workshop experience, with the active involvement of the facilitator.

    WHAT IS VIRTUAL WORKSHOPPING?
Virtual workshopping is an event, just like a normal workshop. Although it is scheduled to take place at a given time, the beneficiaries can access it remotely, from home or their place of work. It can be delivered over several days, with attendees taken through the materials in various ways, including audio or video presentations, webinars or documents.
    WHAT DOES IT PROVIDE?
Synchronous and asynchronous chats are provided around key issues, and polls are taken on various topics, with the workshop facilitator having the ability to provide feedback to answers provided by attendees. Generally, a takeaway template is provided for attendees in PDF format to apply what they have learned in their own businesses.
    WHAT ABOUT CERTIFICATION?
At the end of the workshop, attendees are asked to take a quiz and complete an evaluation. Certificates are automatically emailed to those who have met the workshop’s requirements
